Methadone maintenance is a type of treatment for clients in New Era who are dependent on heroin or prescription opioid medications. This form of treatment has been in existence for decades now, and the overall notion is that clients are no longer engaged in the drug using activities that was driven by their addiction because the methadone they are taking satiates cravings and prevents withdrawal. Similar to heroin, methadone is a full opioid agonist which activates the same neurons in the brain as heroin. This is what makes methadone so successful as a substitute for heroin and prescription pain killers.
Individuals enrolled in methadone maintenance must take it daily to avoid withdrawal symptoms from the methadone itself. This can be financially and logistically difficult, but some people feel it is a better alternative to a heroin addiction. However, someone beginning methadone maintenance should be aware of the fact that methadone detox is known to be way more challenging than even heroin detox and withdrawal. Once on a high dosage of methadone, there are many detoxification centers that will not take methadone maintenance clients since detox can be so difficult and relapse rates are considerably high.
