The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of health efforts to promote the mental health of the nation. One of its duties is the administering of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are centers that offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Medicine given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation centers in Novi are programs which are officially permitted to dispense the drugs used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also get ancillary services aside from medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment center can receive basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehabilitation center is approved to operate, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years contingent upon the kind of accreditation it has been granted.
