The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to promote the mental health of the nation. One of its responsibilities is the oversight of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medications given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Black are programs which are officially permitted to distribute the medications used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary benefits in addition to medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehab center can get their initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment facilities accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every 3 years depending on the kind of accreditation that was given.
