The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to promote the behavioral health of the United States. One of its obligations is the supervision of opioid rehab programs, which are programs who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medications given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Independence are programs which are officially allowed to dispense the medicines used in MAT as long as they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive auxiliary services in addition to medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab center can receive initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment programs authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment center is certified, it must be re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the type of certification it has been given.
