The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for efforts to advance the behavioral health of the United States. One of its duties is the oversight of opioid treatment facilities, which are centers who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Drug administered are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in Miami are programs which are legally allowed to dispense the drugs used in MAT as long as they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary benefits aside from medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehabilitation program can receive basic certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehab facility is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every three years depending on the kind of accreditation it has been granted.
