The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its duties is the oversight of opioid rehab programs, which are centers that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Drug given are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Oregon are programs who are legally permitted to give out the medicines used in MAT being they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary benefits aside from medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehabilitation program can receive initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehabilitation programs authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehabilitation center is certified, they need to get re-certified every year or every three years contingent upon the type of accreditation it has been granted.
