The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of health efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the oversight of opioid treatment programs, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medications administered are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted people. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Saginaw are programs that are legally permitted to distribute the medications used in MAT as long as they remain certified and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also get auxiliary benefits in addition to medication like counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehab facility can receive basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehabilitation programs authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation center is certified, it must be re-certified each year or every three years depending on the kind of certification that was given.
