The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of health efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the oversight of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. An opioid rehab facility can get their initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehabilitation facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every three years depending on the kind of accreditation it has been given.
