If someone is receiving outpatient detoxification they must go to the facility helping them with their detox daily or at least 5 days per week in most cases. Outpatient detox is either delivered in the evening or daytime, which makes it perfect for a person who must keep a normal school or work schedule. Some facilities may also offer ways to participate in detox treatment in either regular outpatient or outpatient day treatment, to augment detoxification services and help prevent a relapse.
A standard time individuals remain in outpatient detox is approximately a week. A number of facilities use medically assisted detox approaches while others offer medication free detox services. At times when meds are needed to avert deadly withdrawal problems, as is the case with alcohol and benzodiazepine medications where seizures are sometimes a problem. Alternatively, medical staff at the program help people handle their physical, emotional and psychological symptoms of withdrawal and cravings until they are safely detoxified and balanced.
While outpatient detoxification in Polaris is more adaptable for obvious reasons, a serious drawback is that clients are at a greater risk of falling back into addiction due to the access they maintain to drugs and alcohol. Ideally, clients will transition into a log-term or short-term recovery program to address the reasons for their addiction once outpatient or inpatient detox is complete.
