The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the administering of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are programs that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Drug prescribed are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in Polaris are programs who are officially allowed to dispense the medications used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary benefits in addition to medication like counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment center can get their basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment facilities accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment program is certified, it must be re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the type of accreditation that was given.
