The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of efforts to advance the behavioral health of the United States. One of its responsibilities is the administering of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are centers which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Drug given are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment facilities in Sumatra are programs which are legally permitted to dispense the medications used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also get ancillary services aside from medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid treatment program can receive initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment programs accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehab facility is certified, they need to get re-certified every year or every three years contingent upon the type of certification that was granted.
