Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Black Creek, NC.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Black Creek that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
