Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Cameron, NC.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Cameron that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
