Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Cumberland, NC.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Cumberland that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
