Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Deep Gap, NC.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Deep Gap which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
