Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Fort Bragg, NC.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Fort Bragg which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
