Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Godwin, NC.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Godwin which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
