Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Jonas Ridge, NC.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Jonas Ridge which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
