Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Pinnacle, NC.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Pinnacle which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
