Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Seaboard, NC.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Seaboard that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
