There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Snow Camp that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will ideally no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is encouraged.
