Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Teachey, NC.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Teachey which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
