Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Halliday, ND.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Halliday that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
