Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Medina, ND.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Medina which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
