Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Bridgeport, NE.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Bridgeport which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
