Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Butte, NE.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Butte that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
