One of its obligations is the administering of opioid rehab programs, which are programs who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Medications prescribed are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent clients. A requirement that MAT clients must also get auxiliary benefits aside from medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment facility can get their initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment programs authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation program is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified every year or every three years contingent upon the type of accreditation it has been granted.
