Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Collingswood, NJ.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Collingswood that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
