The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for efforts to advance the behavioral health of the U.S.. One of its responsibilities is the supervision of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medicine administered are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment facilities in Delaware are programs who are legally allowed to dispense the drugs used in MAT as long as they remain certified and always maintain the necessary requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary services in addition to medicine like counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehabilitation center can get their basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment programs accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation program is certified, they need to get re-certified every year or every three years depending on the kind of accreditation it has been granted.
