Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Dover, NJ.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Dover that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
