Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Metuchen, NJ.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Metuchen which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
