Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Northvale, NJ.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Northvale which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
