One of the out-patient rehab options for clients in Ramsey struggling with opioid dependence and addiction is opioid maintenance therapy. Licensed facilities and doctors are certified to dispense certain meds to opioid addicted individuals, many of which are opioids also and are addictive. In low amounts the client doesn't experience high feelings but also does not experience severe cravings and is not experiencing opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first drug administered for this sole purpose, but there are a few more choices currently to pick from.
Methadone is an opiate and can be taken at an out-patient medical center certified to dispense the med, that is taken daily as a pill or liquid. The price of the drug is about $150 monthly. Buprenorphine is also an opioid-based med, and is in pill form often taken every other day. But different from Methadone which is only be administered in highly structured clinics, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is approximately $300 per month for the generic of the medication. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains the ingredient naloxone, which is a med that blocks the effects of opioids. An individual taking this formulation, AKA Suboxone, would find it harder to feel high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken on a daily basis, and costs about $450 a month. Naltrexone is another medication taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs mentioned it's an opiate blocker and isn't an opiate. A person has the choice to take this medication as a monthly injection, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents a person from experience being high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily shot costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 monthly.
