Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - South Orange, NJ.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in South Orange which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
