Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Titusville, NJ.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Titusville that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
