The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for health efforts to promote the mental health of the U.S.. One of its responsibilities is the administering of opioid treatment programs, which are programs that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Medicine administered are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in Union are programs which are legally permitted to give out the medications used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive auxiliary services in addition to medicine like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab facility can receive initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab programs accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehab program is certified, they need to get re-certified each year or every 3 years depending on the type of accreditation it has been given.
