The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for health efforts to advance the mental health of the United States. One of its obligations is the administering of opioid rehab programs, which are programs which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medicine prescribed are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Washington are programs who are officially permitted to dispense the medicines used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive auxiliary benefits aside from medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab facility can receive basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation facilities accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment program is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified every year or every three years depending on the kind of certification it has been given.
