Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Whiting, NJ.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Whiting that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
