If a person is receiving outpatient detoxification they must go to the center assisting them with their detox every day or at minimum 5 days per week in most cases. Outpatient detoxification services are either done in the daytime or evening, which makes it ideal for someone who must maintain a regular work or school schedule. Some programs may offer ways to participate in treatment in either regular outpatient or outpatient day treatment, to augment detox services and try to prevent relapse.

An average amount of time clients participate in outpatient detoxification is approximately 7 days. Some facilities use medically assisted detox approaches while others provide drug free detox treatement. At times when medications are necessary to avert life-threatening withdrawal symptoms, as is the case with alcohol and benzodiazepine medications where seizures are sometimes an issue. Alternatively, staff at the center help individuals manage their physical, emotional and psychological symptoms of withdrawal and cravings until they are safely detoxified and balanced.

While outpatient detoxification in Cuba is more flexible for obvious reasons, a very severe disadvantage is that people are at a greater chance of falling back into addiction due to the access they maintain to drugs. Ideally, individuals will transition into a comprehensive treatment program to address the causes of their addiction once outpatient or inpatient detoxification is complete.
