The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency responsible for efforts to promote the behavioral health of the nation. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid treatment programs, which are centers that offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Drug given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid dependent clients. An opioid treatment center can receive initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment facility is certified, it must be re-certified each year or every 3 years depending on the type of certification that was granted.
