The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for health efforts to promote the behavioral health of the United States. One of its duties is the supervision of opioid rehabilitation programs, which are centers which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Medications prescribed are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent people. SAMSHA certified opioid rehab centers in Rio Communities are programs who are officially allowed to dispense the medications used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive auxiliary benefits aside from medicine like psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehabilitation center can receive basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehabilitation program is certified, they need to get re-certified every year or every 3 years contingent upon the type of certification it has been granted.
