Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Santa Fe, NM.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Santa Fe which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
