The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. One of its duties is the administering of opioid treatment facilities, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Medications prescribed are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Gerlach are programs who are officially permitted to dispense the medications used in MAT as long as they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT clients must also get ancillary benefits in addition to medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehabilitation center can receive basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab programs accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment facility is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified every year or every three years depending on the type of accreditation it has been given.
