Medicare is a federal program which helps pay for medical healthcare services for individuals living in the U.S. who are either disabled or 65 years of age or older. Medicare consists of different "Parts", with Parts A-D covering certain kinds of treatment.
Part A (Insurance for Hospital Stays) - Medicare Part A covers inpatient drug and alcohol treatment, and up to 60 days in treatment without a co-pay but individuals will be required to pay a deductible. Medicare only covers a total of 190 days of inpatient care, as in during the individual's lifetime.
Part B (Medical Insurance) ? Medicare Part B covers up to 80% of the costs for outpatient drug and alcohol rehab. This includes outpatient services, therapy/counseling, treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders such as anxiety disorders or depression and medications dispensed by clinics. It also covers professional intervention services.
Part C (Medicare-approved Private Insurance) Medicare Part D is an alternative for individuals who want additional coverage apart from Medicare Parts A, B, and D. People who have Part C may have more insurance benefits available to them, but out-of-pocket costs and coverage is different and may be more expensive.
Part D (Prescription Insurance) Medicare Part D covers substance abuse related medications. Including medications used for withdrawal symptoms during detoxification as well as medications required for maintenance therapy such as buprenorphine or methadone.
