Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Beacon, NY.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Beacon which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
