Clients referred from the court for drug or alcohol rehabilitation are usually referred because they are being given a chance to try their hand at treatment instead of jail time, other charges, fines, etc. While this is more prevalent among first time offenders, it can occur at any point including while the defendant is being held in jail. There are different types of facilities that criminal justice clients might be referred to, and this all depends on which programs are available in Ontario and the type of issues they'll need treatment for.

There are rehab facilities that work primarily with the courts to treat this specific type of clientele, and are usually state funded or are available at no cost or very little cost to the client.
