Regular outpatient rehabilitation is usually a less costly alternative to more intensive outpatient centers or inpatient rehab, and is the lowest intensity of formal drug or alcohol treatment available in Panama. Some people are attending treatment for their first time and have chosen regular outpatient because that is all they can afford and time commitment and logistically because of work, school or other obligations. In some cases, regular outpatient is a step down from rehab in a more intense outpatient program such as a partial hospitalization or inpatient program.
Regular out-patient rehabilitation options usually involve some kind of group and individual counseling services delivered once or twice a week. Centers which include a more diverse spectrum of services may include counseling (CBT) to assist with relapse prevention and dual diagnosis services to help address co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders. The length of time an individual stays in recovery can change from client to client, and a person's improvement can be assessed occasionally and more rehab can be suggested contingent upon these evaluations.
In many situations, a regular outpatient treatment facility may be lacking in intensity for a client who is facing a severe alcohol and drug problem and has never gone to rehab before or has relapsed after prior outpatient rehabilitation.
