American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require treatment for substance abuse and addiction. On the Contrary, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely accepted a diversion option to receive rehab instead of jail time. So therefore, there is definitely a need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the various requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction rehabilitation programs in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Peru face is access to comprehensive and effective services, particularly those who reside in rural regions. Programs offering substance abuse treatment services in rural regions commonly are not set up to provide strategic planning intended for the needs and demands of this special demographic including addiction treatment services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can consult with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their tribe or region to figure out which services are an option for them through which rehab facilities, and which ones will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants sanctioned in recent years to cover these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effectively established programs which offer evidence based treatment that also encompasses culturally sensitive treatment services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual staff members.
