Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.
There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.
