There are addiction programs offered in or near Chippewa Lake which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will instead no longer engage in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
